Downsizing /
Retirement
This type of staging is
particularly important, and probably the most emotional of all.
Beginning your “Second Childhood” can be a wonderful experience, and
having your most treasured possessions with you makes it even more
special. But deciding what to keep and what to let go can be
difficult, and this is where a professional stager can lend
objectivity and sensitivity to the moving process.
Down-sizing to a smaller space can have the advantage of providing
you with a sense of coziness when your favored belongings move with
you – but too much crammed into smaller spaces may change the
coziness into claustrophobia.
It takes a good eye and just a bit of imagination to see how old
pieces can be re-staged for new uses – like using a barrister
bookcase as a bar as well as a place to store books and accessories.
The large dining table with seating for 8 may not fit in your new
dining space, but the buffet could be repurposed as a living room
credenza to store linens or dinnerware. And small chest previously
used as end tables my become the best nightstands ever – with larger
surfaces for lamps and reading material and more storage.
Professional staging services should also recommend paint colors,
lighting, and flooring options if options are available to really
help you make the transition a pleasant and easy one. In fact, most
people using staging services when retiring or down-sizing are
particularly glad for the purging that pre-empts the move – once
it’s over.
